Razor Clam Adventure (NEW)

May 14 @ 8:30 am - 12:00 pm

Gerhart, Oregon.

$30 – $50 sliding scale, children pay their age, see details.
Learn how to find, dig, transport, clean and prepare razor clams during one of the lowest tides this year. Learn gathering regulations and limits. The times we meet are dictated by when the tides are low enough to for us to reach the clams. *End time is just an estimate.

What to Bring

Each person should bring a 2017 Oregon Recreational Shellfish License – Read about licenses below. A license is mandatory for anyone 12 or older! Either a small 2 or 3 gallon collecting pail or a clamming mesh bag. Either should be designed to hang from your belt. Either chest waders or old wetable tennis shoes, very warm layered wool clothing (you will get wet up to your waist if you clam in the surf), a towel, and a change of cloths unless you don’t go in the water. Water, and something to snack on. The first part of this workshop is based on the clamming gun, so either buy or borrow one. We will cover the use of razor clamming shovels after the gun people are well under way. Shovels are preferred by professionals, but currently available ones are poorly designed, difficult to use for beginners and result in many clams being needlessly killed and difficult to retrieve. This workshop is for beginners to learn and get practice with clam guns and shovels. Prepare for variable coastal weather!

Clam Gun and Shovel
  • A current Oregon Shellfish Collecting License
  • Clam gun (preferred) or a razor clam shovel (see left)
  • Chest Waders or Old wettable pants and tennis shoes
  • Clamming Bag: mesh or cloth.
  • Warm layered wool or other wet insulation clothing – you may get wet
  • A Day Pack to carry water, snacks and extra layers
  • Cooler or 3 or 5 gallon pail for post clamming transport
  • A towel and change of cloths if you need it
Recreational Shellfish Licenses

Recreational Shellfish Licenses are now required for anyone 12 and over to collect shellfish in Oregon. In-state licenses are $9/year, Out of state licenses are $17 for 3 days or $26/year. 3-Day licenses must specify the days you intend to do the collecting. You must carry the License with you during the workshop or you will only be allowed to watch. If shellfish are found in your possession on the beach and you do not have a license, the fine is $75 and up. Licenses should be purchased “PRIOR” to our events at any Oregon Fred Meyer, Bi-Mart, and other sporting goods stores.

If you have any questions call the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife at 800-720-6339 or 503-947-6000. There is an informational page here. Licenses can be ordered by mail but the process takes about a month. DO NOT wait until the last minute!

Sliding Scale Economics
Due to hard economic times for some, sliding scales are offered to support individual financial circumstances.  We ask participants to pay what they feel they can afford within the range offered for each workshop.  You decide what to pay using an honest assessment of your individual circumstances.  We do not ask anyone to explain their very personal decision.  The high end is a very reasonable price for these quality workshops for those who are doing well in this economy. Groups must contact us for circumstance-specific rates. Rendezvous have their own rates.

$3 Discounts are available on our Registration Form for adult family members that attend together, Native Americans, full time college students and scout leaders. Children (17 and under) must be accompanied by their parent(s). Children under 7 are free. Children 7 and above pay their age. Classrooms and teachers with students are not eligible for these discounts and must contact us for circumstance-specific rates. Rendezvous have their own rates.
