SUMMARY:Edible Wild Plants - Free Presentation in Willamina\, OR
DESCRIPTION:West Valley Community Campus Auditorium266 SE Washington St\, Willamina OR 97396\nIn this beautiful\, educational and fun slide presentation\, Dr. Kallas shows how to identify\, harvest and prepare nutritious\, delicious\, and abundant edible wild plants found within walking distance of your kitchen. He shows you features that make for effective learning in any wild food book. And ends with a short video. \nThis presentation is a sampling of the content of John Kallas’ book: Edible Wild Plants: Wild foods From Dirt to Plate. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer period and a book signing. \nEdible Wild Plants is ground-breaking: It’s the first book to make wild foods understandable and usable by the general public—including gardeners\, chefs\, dieters\, home cooks and nutrition-minded consumers. John makes it fun and easy to learn about foods you’ve unknowingly passed by all your life. He gives you the knowledge and confidence to finally begin eating and enjoying these foods. \nThis book focuses on abundant and nutritious wild greens\, vegetables and seeds eaten by our European ancestors. The same plants are found throughout North America. These healthy wild foods are the core of the true Mediterranean Diet. This book reveals how easy it is to incorporate these foods into everyday modern life. \nTo learn about a workshop that John is teaching in the afternoon\, go here. \n\n\nThe Author\nJohn Kallas has investigated edible wild plants since 1970 and taught about them since 1978. A trained botanist\, nature photographer\, writer\, researcher\, and teacher\, Dr. Kallas has a doctorate in Nutrition\, a Masters in Education\, and majors in Biology and Natural Science. He founded Wild Food Adventures\, The Institute for the Study of Edible Wild Plants & Other Foragables in 1993 and was the primary writer and editor of the Wild Food Adventurer newsletter. He published Edible Wild Plants: Wild foods From Dirt to Plate in 2010; volume 1 of his book series. SUMMARY:Wild Foods of Willamina\, Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Willamina\, Oregon.\n$25 – $50 sliding scale\, children pay their age\, see details.\nWe’ll bushwhack through Willamina habitats to find some of mid-season’s best and diverse delectables — flowers\, fruits\, and greens. Wild as well as landscaped edibles will be identified. Some eating may occur. You will later find most of this abundance in local habitats all around you. \nWhat to Bring\nPrepare for the weather. Bring comfortable hiking shoes. Wear long pants since high grass and rough plants in some areas may cut exposed legs. If hot and sunny wear a wide brimmed shade hat and light colored reflective clothing. Bring water and a spray mister to mist each other to cool off. \nMeeting Site\nBe at the Fendall Hall Schoolhouse just before 1pm. It’s located at: 37515 SW Tindle Creek Rd\, Willamina\, OR 97396. We’ll cover some plants there and carpool to a second location. \n\nPricing Details\nSliding Scale Economics\nDue to hard economic times for some\, sliding scales are offered to support individual financial circumstances.  We ask participants to pay what they feel they can afford within the range offered for each workshop.  You decide what to pay using an honest assessment of your individual circumstances.  We do not ask anyone to explain their very personal decision.  The high end is a very reasonable price for these quality workshops for those who are doing well in this economy. Groups must contact us for circumstance-specific rates.\nDiscounts\n$3 Discounts are available on our Registration Form for adult family members that attend together\, Native Americans\, full time college students and scout leaders.
