SUMMARY:Acorn Pudding and Extracting Volatile Oils
DESCRIPTION:Portland\, Oregon.\n$30 – $60 sliding scale\, children pay their age\, see details.\nGet hands-on experience on how some wild plants are processed for grain\, flour\, and essential oils. We’ll see how to shell\, grind\, process and leach acorns so that they transform into wonderful additions to breads\, muffins\, pancakes\, and pudding. By the end of the workshop we’ll have gone from bitter acorns in the shell to a sweet acorn pudding that any normal human would enjoy. Also learn how to make a distillation setup from simple kitchen ware. We’ll make a distillate hydrosol from mint that you could perfect at home use to flavor teas\, use in cooking or aroma therapy. \nHelp Gather Acorns on Saturday\nWhile you can certainly gather acorns on your own (and that is encouraged) in your own neighborhood\, you can also join us to do that around 5pm the day before the workshop in SE Portland. Contact John if you want to participate. \nWhere to Meet\nWild Food Adventures. 422 SE 49th Ave\, Portland OR 97215. See Map.\nThis is NOT where to meet for acorn gathering the day before. You’ll have to call about that. \nWhat to Bring\n— Any remaining registration materials that you need to hand in.\n— Prepare for the weather.\n— Clothes you can get dirty in.\n— A hammer\, a butter knife\, and a brick if you have one. A pillow to sit on (some will be sitting on the ground). Latex gloves if you have delicate hands to protect you against the tannins.\n— If you have access to them\, your own fresh acorns (large only)\, and mint or lemon balm cuttings for the distillation process.\n— Money if you want to buy John’s books ($25-30 each [sliding scale] list price is $28). We accept cash\, check\, or CC ($1 extra each book for CC fee). Edible Wild Plants\, Volumes 1 and 2 are available after each workshop to look at or buy. \n\nPricing Details\nSliding Scale Economics\nDue to hard economic times for some\, sliding scales are offered to support individual financial circumstances.  We ask participants to pay what they feel they can afford within the range offered for each workshop.  You decide what to pay using an honest assessment of your individual circumstances.  We do not ask anyone to explain their very personal decision.  The high end is a very reasonable price for these quality workshops for those who are doing well in this economy. Groups must contact us for circumstance-specific rates. \nDiscounts\n$5 Discounts are available on our Registration Form for adult family members that attend together\, persons identifying as indigenous\, full time college students and scout leaders. Children (17 and under) must be accompanied by their parent(s). Children under 7 are free. Children 7 and above pay their age. Classrooms and teachers with students are not eligible for these discounts and must contact us for circumstance-specific rates. \nRefund & Transfer Policies\nIf you cannot attend a workshop you registered for\, and you contact us immediately\, or at the latest\, the last weekday before the event\, you are entitled to a transfer or refund minus a $5 processing fee. If you do not show up the day of a workshop you registered for\, you forfeit the full amount paid. \n\nEnrollment Limited! – Advanced registration reserves you a place in the workshop. Walk-ons may be turned away if our size limit is reached. When registering by mail\, assume a workshop is open unless you see a “FULL” notice posted above. \nRegistration\nDownload the REGISTRATION and WAIVER Forms.
