SUMMARY:Mahogany & Softshell Clam Dig
DESCRIPTION:Lincoln City\, Oregon.\n$35 – $60 sliding scale\, children pay their age\, see details.\nWe will have gobs of fun and gather some of the tastiest\, most tender clams you’ll eat. Their shell colors are amazing. Mahogany clams are also known as purple varnish clams. Learn how to find\, dig\, transport\, clean\, and prepare mahogany and other soft shell clams during one of the lowest tides this year. Learn gathering regulations\, limits and the tools used to dig them. The times we meet are dictated by when the tides are low enough to for us to reach the clams. End time is just an estimate. \nQuick Links\n\n\nWhat to Bring    |    \nShellfish License   |    \nWhere to Meet   |    \nPayment Information   |    \nRegistration/Waiver   |    \nLocation Map\n\n\nWhat to Bring\nEach person should bring a 2026 Oregon Recreational Shellfish License – Read about licenses below. A license is mandatory for anyone 12 or older! \nDigging Tools:\nNo digging tools are necessary for these clams except your hands. If your hands are sensitive\, bring gardening gloves that are thin enough to feel small objects but strong enough so they don’t rip while digging in sand. \n\n\n\nA current Oregon Shellfish Collecting License\nAny remaining registration materials that you need to hand in..\nOld wettable tennis shoes\nTowel\nA change of cloths. Your pants will definitely need to be changed after this. While waders would protect your pants mostly\, they are heavy cumbersome and will be hot to wear.\n\n\n\n\nOne 3 or 5 gallon pail per person\nDaypackpack to hold water and other things you want with you on the beach\nWater\nA sac lunch\nSnacks\nMoney if you want to buy John’s books ($25-30 each [sliding scale] list price is $28). We accept cash\, check\, or CC ($1 extra each book for CC fee). Edible Wild Plants\, Volumes 1 and 2 are available after each workshop to look at or buy.\n\n\n\n\nRecreational Shellfish Licenses\nRecreational Shellfish Licenses are now required for anyone 12 and over to collect shellfish in Oregon. In-state licenses are $10/year\, Out of state licenses are $19 for 3 days or $28/year. 3-Day licenses must specify the days you intend to do the collecting. You must carry the License with you during the workshop (in a phone app or a printed copy) or you will only be allowed to watch. If shellfish are found in your possession on the beach and you do not have a license\, the fine is $80 and up. Licenses should be purchased “PRIOR” to our events by going to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife web site. DO NOT wait until the last minute! Here is how to do it: \nSteps to Getting a Shellfish License\nGo to the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife web site Or you may be able to do the whole thing from your phone from their “MyODFW” app. I have not tried the phone app route to pay so the directions here are only how to do it on your computer.\nWait until after January 2 of the workshop year of the workshop you register for.\nIf you are new\, press: “Create an Account Today”\nCreate a user name & password – Record them since you will use the same account every year when purchasing a license or to open the app.\nIf you already have a digital account\, press: “Verify/Look up your Account”\nFollow the prompts.\nOnce an account is created click\, “Purchase From the Catalog”\nType “Annual Shellfish License” in the search bar.\nClick “Add” to add it to your cart. Then go to your cart to purchase.\nWhen done\, the license will be added to your\, “Recreational Portfolio” for the current year. It is good until December 31 of the year you buy it.\nPrint out or save a pdf copy to your computer.\nOn your phone go to your APP Store and search for “MyODFW”. Add it to your phone apps. Load in your user name and password and it will display your license. Then if you are ever stopped by the coastal authorities you can just pull up the app.\nIf you have trouble understanding the process\, the licensing office number is: 503-947-6101 \nFor more information:\nCall the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife at 800-720-6339 or 503-947-6000.\nGeneral Clamming Information: Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife\nShellfish Regulations & Limits: Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife \nNote: that a license does not allow us the ability to collect shellfish if there is a marine toxin advisory from the Department of Fish & Wildlife\, The Department of Health\, or the USDA.\n  \nMeet us in Lincoln City\nMeet us in Siletz Bay Park on Hwy 101 at the south end of Lincoln City. Here is a MAP to the site. Be there before 8am. The parking is somewhat spread out if you don’t get there early. Park in the Siletz Bay parking areas or across the bridge where there is a lot more parking. Do not park in local business parking lots or you will likely be towed. There is a restroom on site. Wait patiently in the park in case we get delayed\, get to know the other participants\, read a book\, change into your beach cloths and shoes. We’ll swing by soon for registration and to proceed on to the workshop site. If you miss us or are late\, look down into the bay for a bunch of people on the sand and come to us. Make sure we have your cell phone number if you have one (in case of an emergency)! Program our number 503-775-3828 into your cell phone. But note that cell phone service in the coast range is almost non-existent so anyone\, including the instructor\, cannot be reached while traveling there. Ocean low tide is estimated to be around 9:12am for this date. \nCarpooling from Portland\nIf you need a ride to the coast\, or prefer carpooling or caravanning\, give us a call. If carpooling is arranged expect to give $10 to the driver to help pay for fuel. \n\nPricing Details\nSliding Scale Economics\nDue to hard economic times for some\, sliding scales are offered to support individual financial circumstances.  We ask participants to pay what they feel they can afford within the range offered for each workshop.  You decide what to pay using an honest assessment of your individual circumstances.  We do not ask anyone to explain their very personal decision.  The high end is a very reasonable price for these quality workshops for those who are doing well in this economy. Groups must contact us for circumstance-specific rates. Rendezvous have their own rates. \nDiscounts\n$5 Discounts are available on our Registration Form for adult family members that attend together\, persons identifying as indigenous\, full time college students and scout leaders. Children (17 and under) must be accompanied by their parent(s). Children under 7 are free. Children 7 and above pay their age. Classrooms and teachers with students are not eligible for these discounts and must contact us for circumstance-specific rates. Rendezvous have their own rates. \nRefund & Transfer Policies\nIf you cannot attend a workshop you registered for\, and you contact us immediately\, or at the latest\, the last weekday before the event\, you are entitled to a transfer or refund minus a $5 processing fee. If you do not show up the day of a workshop you registered for\, you forfeit the full amount paid. \n\nEnrollment Limited! – Advanced registration reserves you a place in the workshop. Walk-ons may be turned away if our size limit is reached. When registering by mail\, assume a workshop is open unless you see a “FULL” notice posted above. \nRegistration\nDownload the REGISTRATION and WAIVER Forms. Print and fill out these forms and mail them with payment to: Wild Food Adventures\, 422 SE 49th Ave\, Portland\, OR 97215. If there is space and your are a walk-on\, bring the forms and payment with you. While you can register many times throughout the year\, only a single waiver form is required per person per year (Jan 1 – Dec 31) for all our day events. Multi-day Rendezvous require an additional waiver. \n\nCancellation Due to Nature Or Contaminated Runoff\nDue to warming oceans\, red tides have become more frequent. For the first time in 30 years (so it is rare) the whole coast was closed for about a month in 2024 to any clamming. If a major closure happens during the date of this event\, we would have to cancel it. Any time we have to cancel an event\, it is a huge inconvenience to all of us. A cancelled clamming workshop costs Wild Food Adventures up to two thousand dollars in time\, advertising\, bookkeeping\, management\, license fees\, and refunds. It could also cost you\, even if I refund all your money. If you decide to rent nearby lodging at the coast\, incur travel or other expenses\, or plan with other people\, we cannot reimburse you or make up for any change in your plans. If we have to cancel\, the only thing you can do is make the best of whatever plans you already made.

No waiting\, no shipping\, you can do this yourself in a few minutes\, at the last minute if you so desire. Hand it right to the giftee or put it under the tree. We cover edible wild plants\, sea vegetables\, shellfish and other forageables. Here is a poster showing our upcoming or past events to give you an idea of the kinds of workshops that the giftee can eventually choose from. Each involves the identification\, gathering\, processing and preparing of feasts out of the wild foods we gather. These are remarkable events with life changing impacts on participants. SUMMARY:Edible Wild Plants Book Release Party with Slide Presentation
DESCRIPTION:FREE Event. Location: Trackers Earth Auditorium\, 4617 SE Milwaukie Ave\, Portland\, OR 97202Arrive early (about 6:45pm) to find parking and get a good vantage point in the auditorium.\nJoin John Kallas\, Wild Food Adventures\, and Trackers Earth as we celebrate the release of John’s new book: “Edible Wild Plants: Wild Foods From Foraging to Feasting”. This is the second volume in his successful Wild Food Adventures book series.\nThe program includes a free educational slide presentation about edible wild plants\, informational handouts\, a book signing\, demonstrations by Trackers Earth\, and general hobnobbing. \nFree Fun Enlightening Slide Presentation\nIn this beautiful\, colorful slide presentation\, Dr. Kallas shows how to identify\, harvest and prepare nutritious\, delicious\, and abundant edible wild plants found within walking distance of your kitchen. He shows you features that make for effective learning in any wild food book. And ends with a short video. \nThis presentation is a sampling of the content of John Kallas’ new book: Edible Wild Plants: Wild Foods From Foraging to Feasting. Volume 2 of the Wild Food Adventure series. May 16 is the international release date for the book. You all will be seeing it for the first time. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer period and a book signing. \nAbout the Books\nEdible Wild Plants\, Volumes 1 & 2 are ground-breaking: They are the first books to make wild foods understandable and usable by the general public—including gardeners\, chefs\, dieters\, home cooks and nutrition-minded consumers. John makes it fun and easy to learn about foods you’ve unknowingly passed by all your life. He provides you with gobs of useful photographs as well as the knowledge and confidence to begin eating and enjoying these foods. \nWhile the focus of the day is on volume 2\, both volumes focus on abundant and nutritious wild greens\, vegetables\, roots\, flowers\, fruits\, and seeds eaten by our North American and European ancestors. All these plants are found in the Pacific Northwest and all of North America. They also provide the healthy wild foods that are the core of the true Mediterranean Diet. These books reveal how easy it is to incorporate wild foods into everyday modern life. \nSigned Books for Sale\nVolumes 1 and 2\, signed by the author\, will be available for preview and/or purchase. List price is $28\, but we are offering them at sliding scale for those that need it: $25-$30\, you decide on what you can afford. Cash\, check\, or credit card accepted. You can get ahead of the pack by buying a book before the presentation\, or wait until you’ve seen the presentation. No purchase necessary\, you can just look if you want. By buying the books here you support the author\, avoid shipping costs\, and you can get started right away. \nOther Activities\nTrackers Earth\, Portland is hosting the event and will have outdoor skill instructors available for demonstrations and questions.\nFree 2023 information factsheets about Wild Food Adventure Workshops and Trackers Earth classes for adults and children will be available. Trackers might have instructors demonstrating outdoor skills they teach. \nArrival Time\, Parking\, & Seating\nWe have a 7:15pm presentation start time. Plan ahead for traffic\, parking\, and seating. We hope that we are far enough from rush hour that Portland traffic will not be too congested.\nParking: Will be a problem the later you arrive. Try to arrive between 6:25 and 6:45pm. You may prefer to park blocks away in the surrounding neighborhoods. if you are cutting it close\, consider parking in the neighborhoods north of Holgate: Think Reynolds St or 12th and 15th Avenues. Milwaukie Ave in front of Trackers near presentation time will be quite congested and slow you down.\nSeating: Trackers auditorium is designed mostly for skill development not large presentations. They only have perhaps 60 seats for early arrivers. Otherwise you might have to stand to watch the presentation. The solution\, of course\, is to bring your own seat. Since we expect a big crowd\, you could help by bringing your own stools\, fold-up or otherwise narrow chairs (ones WITHOUT arm-rests) if you have them. Resin chairs and some folding camping chairs are NOT good since they flair out to the sides (for arm rests or holding beverages) and take up a lot of space. Think: narrow\, narrow\, narrow. Arrive early to get a good vantage point. There will be standing room only once the seating is full. People with chairs will be situated in front of the standing room area. \n\n\nThe Author\nJohn Kallas has investigated edible wild plants since 1970 and taught about them since 1978. A trained botanist\, nature photographer\, writer\, researcher\, and teacher\, Dr. Kallas has a doctorate in Nutrition\, a Masters in Education\, and majors in Biology and Natural Science. He founded Wild Food Adventures\, The Institute for the Study of Edible Wild Plants & Other Foragables in 1993 and was the primary writer and editor of the Wild Food Adventurer newsletter. He published Edible Wild Plants: Wild foods From Dirt to Plate in 2010; volume 1 of his book series. For more information about John\, go here. \n\n\n   \n\n\nVolume 1\nDr. Kallas will sign copies of both books for sale after the presentation. For more information on Volume 1\, go here.\n\n   \n\n\nVolume 2\nThis is the focus of the presentation. For more information on Volume 2\, go here.

SUMMARY:Covid Protocol Policy During Workshops
DESCRIPTION:For all our activities face masks and distancing are optional. This policy is subject to change depending on current realities.\nFollowing our policies is a requirement of attendance to Wild Food Adventure events.\nWith the advent of the Delta and Omicron variants\, there is good reason to be cautious for vulnerable members of society. Individuals should do what they need to protect themselves. Many Oregonians have now had vaccines and being outdoors is quite protective. There are times within our workshops that participants may need to get closer together to see what the instructor is talking about. I will do my best to accommodate participants who need to distance more than others. Do not attend if you are not feeling well the day of your workshop. Indoors\, we can be in tight quarters particularly during Rendezvous events for food processing and educational interactions\, so masks are suggested there if you have any concerns. \nI take this pandemic seriously. Seriously enough to have closed my business for all of 2020 and delayed the start of my 2021 season. 2022 will be treated as a normal season unless conditions change again. \nSome history on my own direct experience:\nBoth my brothers were in critical condition early 2021 and almost lost their lives after getting Covid-19. They were both unvaccinated. One had a healthy lifestyle and no underlying medical conditions\, the other was at a disadvantage. Both brothers are now dealing with possibly permanent fatigue\, lung damage\, and long Covid which may cause additional complications when they get older. An unvaccinated friend just died within three days of contracting the Delta variant in November 2021 and thousands of people are still dying of it each day. One of my friends lost two family members\, another\, after getting out of the hospital had weakness\, fatigue\, and lethargy for six months and is still recovering. My housemate got covid\, was not hospitalized\, but was continually nauseous and vomiting for three weeks until she recovered. Imagine being nauseous and vomiting for three weeks! Her memory has suffered since. I am sure some of you have lost loved ones or friends to this disease. I take this pandemic seriously. Seriously enough to have closed my business for all of 2020 and delayed the start of my 2021 season to adapt. \nI recommend everyone get the vaccine. I am fully vaccinated and will be overjoyed when this pandemic is behind us. \nIf you have questions call 503-775-3828 between 2 and 6pm Pacific time\, any day. \nThanks\, \nJohn Kallas\, Ph.D.\, Director\, Wild Food Adventures\nInstitute for the Study of Edible Wild Plants and Other Foragables\n422 SE 49th Ave\, Portland\, OR 97215\n(503) 775-3828 mail@wildfoodadventures.com
